The following databases are available to students
working from any of the networked computers at THS:
InfoTrac Senior Edition: This
is an online version of InfoTrac that does not require a password
as long as you are using it at Topeka High. This database offers
almost 2 million articles on a broad range of subjects from a wide
range of magazines and journals. Many of these articles are full
text. Many more have an abstract and source information. We also
have one stand-alone version in the library.
InfoTrac Web:
We have access to this database through the State Library. It requires
a password. If you are interested please see one of the media center
staff. Infotrac web is another online database that consists of
several separate databases, which are listed below:
Expanded Academic ASAP
1980 - Jan 2001 From arts
and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology,
this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines.
Access scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers - with full

Business and Company
ASAP 1980 - Jan 2001 Use this database to research
all business and management topics. Includes directory listings
for over 150,000 companies as well as information on Finance,
Trade, New Technologies, Trends and more. Business and Company
ASAP has 5,406,948 articles
¡Informe! (Revistas
en Español) 1998 - Ene. 2001 Has notices, events,
commentaries, current business information, most important health
issues, and popular cultural information all in Spanish. ¡Informe!
(Revistas en Español) has 137,695 articles.
Computer Database 1998
- Jan 2001 Use this database to find computer-related
product introductions, news, and reviews in areas such as hardware,
software, electronics, engineering, communications and the application
of technology. Computer Database has 385,838 articles.
Health Reference Center-Academic
1997 - Jan 2001 Use this database to find articles
on: Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public
Health, Occupational Health & Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse,
HMOs, Prescription Drugs, etc. The material contained in this
database is intend for informational purposes only. Health Reference
Center-Academic has 325,094 articles.
National Newspaper Index
1998 - Jan 2001 Use this database to find information
on: Current Events, Lifestyle, Biographies, Sports, Economics,
Consumer Products, World Affairs, Public Health, Business Trends,
Entertainment and Travel. National Newspaper Index has 712,508
articles.
Sirs Researcher:
We have an online version and a stand-alone version of this database.
SIRS Researcher® is a
general reference database with thousands of full-text articles
exploring social, scientific, health, historic, economic, business,
political and global issues. SIRS contains articles from 1,500
domestic and international newspapers, magazines, journals and
U.S. government publications.
The World Almanac Excerpts
which contains information from The World Almanac and Book of
Facts 2001. Articles focus on world history, nations of the world,
major international organizations and each of the 50 United States,
as well as the District of Columbia an outlying U.S. areas.
Maps of the World Over
300 detailed, colorful maps spanning the globe are available as
an online reference almanac. Maps of the World includes colorful
maps including U.S., Canada, Nations and Regions. State-of-the-art
computer technology with accurate geographic content, precise
cartographic standards and superior design produce these visually
compelling and information-rich maps.
Directory of Publications
Provides background information on 1,500 U.S. and international
magazines, newspapers and journals.
Today's News:
Top News Stories of the Day (Online only) The top news stories
of the day, both in full-text and summary format, are delivered
directly to the SIRS Researcher site from Reuters News Service
and are updated hourly. Online access to the breaking news of
the day is available without leaving the security of SIRS Knowledge
Source.
Spotlight of the Month
(Online only) Each month SIRS research staff selects a topic from
Chase's Calendar of Events and provides comprehensive articles
related to this topic as a sampling from the SIRS Researcher database.
The Spotlight of the Month is available to encourage research
and awareness of relevant issues. These articles can be found
by searching the full-text database at any time and will remain
accessible from the Spotlight of the Month archive for the remainder
of the year. These are the 2000-2001 Spotlight of the Month Topics
which will be posted the 1st of each month. January, The Election
Process February, Black History Month March, National Women's
History Month April, Cancer Awareness May, Canada and the U.S.
June, The Computer, July, National High School Debate Topic August,
Academic Decathlon September, National Hispanic Heritage Month
October, War on Drugs November, Bioethics December, Russia After
Communism We also have access to SIRS DISCOVER which is like SIRS
RESEARCHER except it is geared for elementary and middle school
students.
First Search:
First search is probably the hardest database to use and it also
requires a password. See one of the Media Center staff for passwords.

GaleNet Student Resource Gold
A fully integrated database containing thousands of curriculum-targeted
primary documents, biographies, topical essays, background information,
critical analyses, full-text coverage of 800 magazines, over 10,000
photographs and illustrations, and more than 8 hours of audio and
video clips. It also includes Merriam Websters Collegiate Dictionary,
Merriam Websters Biographical Dictionary, and Merriam Websters Geographical
Dictionary
Readers Guide to Periodicals
Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature, produced by The H. W. Wilson
Company, is a database containing comprehensive indexing of 160
of the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the
United States and Canada. Many of these articles are full-text.
They all contain an abstract of the article and source information.
We also have the print version which contains the citations on any
given topic.
In addition to the three encyclopedias on CD-ROM we have loaded
on stand-alone computers we have access to World
Book Online. This reference database includes articles
from the World Book Encyclopedia plus over 3,700 more. Multimedia
information is integrated into the text information. Searching is
easy using several different methods and access points to find information.
There are links to 15,000 editor approved Web sites. A "Research
Helper" presents students with proven techniques and instructions.
Definitions
databases: large collection of data organized
esp. for rapid search and retrieval (as by a computer)
online version: a database that is accessible
and housed on the world wide web
application launcher: the little window that pops
up with all the icons that 501 has created pathways pointing to
the program or web site
URL: uniform resource locator in other words the
address of a web site
Links: connections on web pages that take you
to other web pages. Usually indicated by being blue in color and
underlined. When you rest your cursor on a link the cursor will
turn into a pointing finger.
Abstract: a summary of the main points of the
article then presented in skeletal form
Stand-alone: A computer that is not connected
to a network
Full Text: The text of the article is available
on the computer
